At the 2025 Zhongguancun Forum, the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence unveiled “Tongtong” 2.0, the world’s first general artificial intelligence (AGI) entity. This virtual being is designed with autonomous learning, cognition, and decision-making capabilities. Developers anticipate that by the end of this year, Tongtong will achieve the cognitive level of a six-year-old child.
Initially introduced in January 2024, Tongtong was conceptualized as an evolving AGI system prototype, with intelligence comparable to a three-year-old child. The 2.0 iteration represents significant advancements in language processing, cognition, action, learning, emotion, and interaction abilities. Notably, Tongtong 2.0 embodies a virtual young girl with her own value system and worldview. She can dynamically update her knowledge base, value functions, and skills through both autonomous learning and external instruction, demonstrating human-like continuous reflection and growth.
Chen Hao, Executive Director of the Advanced Technology Center at the Beijing Institute for General Artificial Intelligence, highlighted that Tongtong 2.0 achieves consistency between language and embodied actions, effectively aligning words with deeds. The institute plans to integrate Tongtong’s cognitive framework with physical robots to enhance her interaction with the physical environment. Furthermore, by the end of the year, the public will have access to interact with Tongtong 2.0 through designated communication channels.
The introduction of Tongtong 2.0 marks a significant milestone in AGI development, showcasing China’s leadership in advancing artificial intelligence technologies.
