China’s First 9,000-Ton Air-Supported Grain Silo Completed, Marking a New Era in Advanced Grain Storage

On March 10, China’s first 9,000-ton air-supported grain silo successfully completed its inflation process, signaling the full-scale implementation of the country’s fourth-generation grain storage technology.

The silo features an air-supported reinforced concrete structure, with a diameter of 24 meters and a height of 33 meters, increasing storage capacity by 1,500 tons compared to previous experimental air-supported silos.

During construction, various optimizations were introduced, including adjustments to the new intelligent electric fan system, protective coverage for surrounding areas, inflation tilt simulations, and refined monitoring responsibilities. The inflation process took only 33 minutes, nearly three times faster than previous models. The dome structure was further refined, and the membrane material was enhanced with hydrophobic and oleophobic coatings. Additionally, an upgraded electric intelligent fan system with pressure control automation was implemented, improving storage capacity, self-cleaning properties, air supply intelligence, waterproofing, thermal insulation, and airtightness. These advancements effectively regulate temperature and humidity within the silo, ensuring grain remains stable and fresh while minimizing losses, reducing energy consumption, and cutting emissions—representing another technological breakthrough in China’s fourth-generation grain storage systems.

A total of five air-supported silos are being constructed simultaneously. These projects will incorporate innovative technologies such as self-developed electric spraying robotic arms, internal low-voltage safety systems, and cloud-based multifunctional air pressure monitoring. The main structures are expected to be completed by November 2025. China Coal Construction Group will continue to drive innovation in air-supported grain silo technology, contributing to national food security and providing a sustainable Chinese solution for global grain storage.
